Here’s the bottom line: Ohio, like many U.S. States, does not maintain or provide a statewide divorce record database. There is no single solution for finding or verifying a divorce record that might be filed anywhere in the state. Instead, you must search at the county level in the Court of Common Pleas in the county where the divorce was filed.
Prior to 1851, Ohio divorce records were found in the county Supreme Court, the county Chancery Court, or the county Common Pleas Court. Appeals were made to the state legislature, and after 1913 divorces were handled by a division of the county Court of Common Pleas known as the Domestic Relations Court. Please contact the Court of Common Pleas of the county where the divorce was filed to request records.
We have provided below the known online resources in Ohio counties where you can search for divorce and other domestic relations filings. Be aware that even though this data comes directly from the courts, they do make disclaimers about the accuracy of their content. They make no warranties as to the accuracy, reliability, or suitability of their data.
Some of these resources make their coverage timeline understood on the disclaimer page. Others may post it on an interior page. Some do not list coverage date restrictions at all. For example, in Union County you can bring up public record summaries going back to January 1, 1990, but document images are only on file from January 1, 2002. Each county will be different.
One of the great advantages of databases that come directly from the public agencies that collect the information is it's the most current and accurate available online. But you should expect a delay of at least 24 hours or so from the time a divorce is recorded. So a divorce record filed yesterday may not yet appear in the online database.
