40.3% of the population is White, 57.7% is Black or African American, 4% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.2% is Asian, 0.6% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 1.1% is two or more races.  79.5% have a high school degree or higher, and 10.5% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $80,600, there are 21,021 households, an average of 2.60 persons per household.  The per capita income is $16,971,  the median household income is $33,960, and 25.2% of the persons in Edgecombe County are considered below poverty level.

The total number of firms, at last estimate, was 3,226.  Retail sales (in $1000) were $324,723, and sales per capita were $6,204.  The percentage of black-owned firms is 31.3%, and the percentage of women-owned firms is 36.5%.
