Maine Public Records

Exceptions to free public access include legislative drafts, bargaining proposals, medical records, juvenile records, security plans that could compromise public safety, Social Security numbers, and other records deemed confidential by law.

Here on this page you’ll find resources for statewide records in Maine.  We feel these are among the most common and useful databases found online at the state level.  Click on the drop-down menu items in the left-hand margin to access more resources.

  • Court System - The Maine court system has three levels. The first is the District Court, which handles non-jury civil & criminal matters, and includes six focus courts: the Family Division; Small Claims of $6K or less; the Violations Bureau to handle all traffic infractions; Drug Court for drug testing, supervision, treatment & sanctions; the Business & Consumer Court for certain business & consumer disputes; and the Unified Criminal Docket in Cumberland & Penobscot Counties. At the second level is the Superior Court, which handles all criminal & civil trials, as well as appeals regarding decisions of state and local administrative agencies. At the top level is the Supreme Court, which reviews decisions of the lower courts. Maine also has county Probate Courts that stand apart from the state system.  Maine Court Records
  • Criminal Records - District Courts handle non-jury felony, misdemeanor, DWI/DUI, and juvenile matters. Jury trials for felonies, misdemeanors, and DWI/DUI cases are handled by the Superior Courts.  For database access and more information, go to our Maine Criminal Records page.

Maine is located in the northern New England region of the United States. The Capital is Augusta and the largest city is Portland.  The Official Web Site is located at http://www.maine.gov/portal/index.html.  Maine is the 41st most populous state in the United States.  The 2014 population estimate is 1,330,089 and the 2010 census population was 1,328,361.  The land area is 30,842.92 square miles and there are 43.1 persons per square mile.

95.2% of the population is White, 1.4% is Black or African American, 1.4% is Hispanic or Latino, 1.1% is Asian, 0.7% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0% is Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 1.6% are two or more races. 91.1% are a high school graduate or higher, and 27.9% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $174,500. There are on average 2.33 persons per household, the per capita income is $26,824, the median household income is $48,453, and 13.6% of the persons in Maine are considered below poverty level.
