Birth Records – For birth records less than 125 years old you have to be as immediate family or have written permission from the next of kin in order to obtain these records. The Alabama Center for Health Statistics started filing birth certificates in 1908. Prior to that time birth records were recorded in Alabama counties. Death Records – Death certificates by Alabama law are confidential and access is restricted for 25 years from the date of death to immediate family members, the family or estate legal representative, or the death certificate informant. Anyone may order a certificate that is more than 25 years old. The Alabama Center for Health Statistics started filing death ceritificates in 1908. Marriage Records - Alabama marriage certificates are not confidential, so there are no restrictions on who may obtain them. Alabama's Center for Health Statistics started recording marriage certificates in August of 1936. For records before that time, contact the issuing county's probate office. Divorce Records - Alabama divorce certificates are not confidential, so there are no restrictions on who may obtain them. The Alabama Center for Health Statistics started filing Alabama divorce certificates in 1950. Divorces prior to that were filed at the county circuit courts and documentation may be obtained from the circuit court where the divorce was granted.
