South Carolina

In South Carolina, there are nine different types of courts. Magistrate Courts and Summary Courts handle misdemeanors, and civil cases of amounts up to $7,500. Municipal Courts handle misdemeanors, and violations of ordinances and traffic laws. Probate Court handles estates, guardianships, and mental & substance abuse commitments. Family Courts handle domestic and juvenile cases. Circuit Courts handle common pleas civil, and general sessions criminal felony & misdemeanor cases. Master-in-Equity Courts handle equity matters referred by the Circuit Court. The Court of Appeals handles appeals from the lower courts. The South Carolina Supreme Court reviews decisions from the Court of Appeals and lower courts.
