In Kansas, there are limited jurisdiction courts, general jurisdiction trial courts, and appellate courts. The appellate courts consist of the Court of Appeals and the Kansas Supreme Court.

Kansas limited jurisdiction courts are Municipal Courts, which handle ordinance violations and traffic offenses.

The District Courts are the general jurisdiction trial courts. They are responsible for all criminal misdemeanor & felony, civil, probate, juvenile, and domestic relations cases. The District Courts also hear appeals from Municipal Courts. Kansas is divided into 31 judicial districts, each having its own District Court.
