Maine Public Records

The Maine Freedom of Access Act, found in Statutes Title One, Chapter 13, provides for public access to the public records of state and local government bodies. Public records are considered any written, printed, graphic, or electronic data created or stored by a public agency or official to document the transaction of public or governmental business.

Exceptions to free public access include legislative drafts, bargaining proposals, medical records, juvenile records, security plans that could compromise public safety, Social Security numbers, and other records deemed confidential by law.

Here on this page you’ll find resources for statewide records in Maine.  We feel these are among the most common and useful databases found online at the state level.  Click on the drop-down menu items in the left-hand margin to access more resources.

  • Court System - The Maine court system has three levels. The first is the District Court, which handles non-jury civil & criminal matters, and includes six focus courts: the Family Division; Small Claims of $6K or less; the Violations Bureau to handle all traffic infractions; Drug Court for drug testing, supervision, treatment & sanctions; the Business & Consumer Court for certain business & consumer disputes; and the Unified Criminal Docket in Cumberland & Penobscot Counties. At the second level is the Superior Court, which handles all criminal & civil trials, as well as appeals regarding decisions of state and local administrative agencies. At the top level is the Supreme Court, which reviews decisions of the lower courts. Maine also has county Probate Courts that stand apart from the state system.  Maine Court Records
