Hawaii Public Records

The public records law of Hawaii is the Uniform Information Practices Act, found in Chapter 92F, Hawaii Revised Statutes. It ensures that all government records are open to public inspection unless access is restricted or closed by law. Public records are any information (written, recorded, electronic, etc.) maintained by a public agency.

Exceptions include records that may infringe on personal privacy, draft bills and committee proceedings, and records that if released would disrupt governmental operations and activities.

On this page you can access resources found at the state level.  These are databases we have evaluated and included because we feel they will be useful to you.  If you need to look at city or county databases, or state licensing resources, use the navigation on the left.

  • Court System - The Hawaii court system has 4 levels. First are District Courts, which handle misdemeanors, traffic infractions & civil cases under $20K. Second are Circuit Courts, the Tax Appeal Court, and the Land Court. Circuit Courts preside over civil, criminal, probate, and guardianship cases and share some non-jury civil cases with the District Court. The Tax Appeal Court handles excise, liquor, tobacco, property, income & insurance tax cases. Land Court handles title & easement rights. Family Courts are divisions of both District & Circuit Courts and handle parental rights, adoption, guardianship, detention, divorce, and non-support cases. Third is the Intermediate Court of Appeals, which reviews lower court decisions.  Highest is the Supreme Court which reviews Intermediate Court decisions.  Hawaii Court Records
