  • Court System - The South Dakota court system has two levels. At the first level are the Circuit Courts, which are the trial courts of general jurisdiction that hear all civil and criminal cases. The Circuit Courts assign Magistrates to handle marriages, ordinance violations, misdemeanors, small claims, and preliminary hearings. At the second level is the South Dakota Supreme Court, which reviews decisions by the Circuit Courts.  South Dakota Court Records
  • Criminal Records - A statewide criminal records search in South Dakota can be searched online (for a fee) through the South Dakota Public Access Record Search (PARS) system, go to the PARS System page for access.
  • Vital Records - Birth, death, marriage & divorce certificates are provided by: South Dakota Vital Records, Department of Health, 600 East Capitol, Pierre, SD 57501-2536, (605) 773-4961.  Birth, death and marriage records are also available from the Register of Deeds in the county where the event took place.  Divorce records are available from the Clerk of Courts in the county where the divorce was granted.  Birth, marriage & divorce records in South Dakota cannot be searched online, but if you know the details and you qualify, you can order record copies.  Go to our Vital Records page for information on ordering birth, death, divorce, and marriage certificates.

The Capital is Pierre and the largest city is Sioux Falls.  The Official Web Site is located at http://sd.gov/.  South Dakota is the 46th most populous state in the United States.  The 2014 population estimate is 853,175 and the 2010 census population was 814,191.  The land area is 75,811.00 square miles and there are 10.7 persons per square mile.

85.9% of the population is White, 1.9% is Black or African American, 3.4% is Hispanic or Latino, 1.2% is Asian, 8.9% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% is Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 2.1% are two or more races. 90.4% are a high school graduate or higher, and 26.2% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $132,400. There are on average 2.45 persons per household, the per capita income is $25,740, the median household income is $49,495, and 14.1% of the persons in South Dakota are considered below poverty level.
