93.9% of the population is White, 3% is Black or African American, 10% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.4% is Asian, 1% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 1.6% is two or more races.  81.2% have a high school degree or higher, and 13.5% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $96,900, there are 19,064 households, an average of 2.71 persons per household.  The per capita income is $21,920,  the median household income is $43,439, and 16.4% of the persons in Van Zandt County are considered below poverty level.
