Upshur County is located in the East Texas Region of Texas.  The County Seat is Gilmer and the largest city is Gilmer.    The 2014 population estimate is 40,354 and the 2010 census population was 39,318.  The land area is 582.95 square miles and there are 67.4 persons per square mile.

87.7% of the population is White, 8.7% is Black or African American, 7.4% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.5% is Asian, 1% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 2% is two or more races.  82.5% have a high school degree or higher, and 13.3% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $89,400, there are 14,286 households, an average of 2.73 persons per household.  The per capita income is $22,483,  the median household income is $46,600, and 15.8% of the persons in Upshur County are considered below poverty level.
