Hays County

Hays County is located in the Central Texas Region of Texas.  The County Seat is San Marcos and the largest city is San Marcos.    The 2014 population estimate is 185,025 and the 2010 census population was 157,127.  The land area is 677.98 square miles and there are 231.7 persons per square mile.

91.2% of the population is White, 4% is Black or African American, 36.7% is Hispanic or Latino, 1.4% is Asian, 1.2% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.2% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 2% is two or more races.  89.3% have a high school degree or higher, and 36.7% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $175,600, there are 56,459 households, an average of 2.77 persons per household.  The per capita income is $26,873,  the median household income is $58,651, and 17% of the persons in Hays County are considered below poverty level.

The total number of firms, at last estimate, was 14,240.  Retail sales (in $1000) were $1,954,688, and sales per capita were $13,765.  The percentage of black-owned firms is 1.8%, and the percentage of women-owned firms is 26.2%.
