49.9% of the population is White, 41.9% is Black or African American, 21.7% is Hispanic or Latino, 5.1% is Asian, 0.7% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 2.2% is two or more races.  83.5% have a high school degree or higher, and 32% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $364,800, there are 277,302 households, an average of 2.76 persons per household.  The per capita income is $32,181,  the median household income is $55,095, and 16.6% of the persons in Essex County are considered below poverty level.

The total number of firms, at last estimate, was 67,880.  Retail sales (in $1000) were $7,750,635, and sales per capita were $10,077.  The percentage of black-owned firms is 21%, and the percentage of women-owned firms is 30.9%.
