80.4% of the population is White, 16.5% is Black or African American, 9.4% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.7% is Asian, 0.6% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 1.6% is two or more races.  77.5% have a high school degree or higher, and 11.4% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $89,600, there are 28,047 households, an average of 2.57 persons per household.  The per capita income is $18,377,  the median household income is $32,497, and 26.4% of the persons in Putnam County are considered below poverty level.
