53.8% of the population is White, 42.3% is Black or African American, 4.9% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.8% is Asian, 0.5% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.3% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 2.3% is two or more races.  80.4% have a high school degree or higher, and 16% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $104,400, there are 21,142 households, an average of 2.60 persons per household.  The per capita income is $19,678,  the median household income is $36,143, and 22% of the persons in Russell County are considered below poverty level.

The total number of firms, at last estimate, was 3,823.  Retail sales (in $1000) were $428,236, and sales per capita were $8,526.  The percentage of black-owned firms is 33.9%, and the percentage of women-owned firms is 32.4%.
