Missouri Public Records

According to the Missouri Sunshine Law, it is the public policy of the state that meetings, records, votes, actions, and deliberations of public governmental bodies be open to the public. The law defines public records as reports, documents, and documentation in regards to public business that are held by a governmental body.

Some of the exceptions identified in the Sunshine Law include personally identifying information, welfare records, personnel records, data relating to security systems, and any records whose disclosure might obstruct operations of government or law enforcement, or endanger the safety of government bodies or agents.

The resources you will find on this page represent the more common and useful databases found at the state level.  To check other databases – such as those maintained at the city and county levels – use the side navigation.

  • Court System - The Missouri court system has three levels. At the first level are the Circuit Courts, the primary trial courts. The Circuit Courts handle all civil and criminal matters. Each court has divisions for circuit, associate circuit, small claims, municipal, criminal, family, probate, and juvenile. At the second level is the Court of Appeals, divided into three regional districts, which reviews decisions by the Circuit Courts. At the third and highest level is the Supreme Court of Missouri, which hears cases transferred from the Court of Appeals, along with certain cases appealed directly from the lower courts.  Missouri Court Records
  • Criminal Records - The Missouri Circuit Courts and its divisions handle all violations, misdemeanors, and felonies. For example, the municipal division of the Circuit Court handles city ordinance violations and minor misdemeanors, while the criminal division handles felony cases. All of these may be searched through the Missouri CaseNet court service. Missouri also has a fee-based criminal history service called MACHS that anyone may search. For quick access to these databases, and others, visit our Missouri Criminal Records page.
