Colorado Public Records

Title 24, Article 72 of the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) creates a standard for public access to government documents. These documents constitute public records, and can include books and papers, as well as tape recordings, maps, electronic mail, photographs, and receipts. Some exceptions to the open access laws include police records, trade secrets, donations to institutions, or information that would pose a security risk to the public or government.

To get started, try the statewide CO databases listed below.  You can branch out to other resources not shown on this page by clicking on the tools displayed on the left.

  • Court System - There are five levels in the Colorado court system. At the first level are the Municipal Courts that handle violations of city & town ordinances. At the second level are County Courts, responsible for misdemeanors, traffic infractions, felony complaints, protection orders, civil cases under $15,000, and small claims. At the third level are District Courts, responsible for civil cases of any amount, domestic relations, criminal, juvenile, probate, & mental health cases. Next is the Court of Appeals, which reviews decisions from lower courts. At the top is the Supreme Court, which handles appeals from the Court of Appeals and sometimes, lower courts. Colorado also has 7 Water Courts to oversee water rights cases. Denver County has its own Juvenile Court and Probate Court.  Colorado Court Records
