Minnesota

In Minnesota, there are trial courts, appellate courts, and other courts outside of the Judicial Branch.

District Courts are trial courts that handle all civil and criminal cases. They have inherited the caseload of former Municipal, County, Probate, and Justice of the Peace courts, which no longer exist in Minnesota.

The appellate courts consist of the Minnesota Court of Appeals, and the Minnesota Supreme Court.

Other courts outside of the Judicial Branch include: the Minnesota Tax Court; the Workers Compensation Court of Appeals; and the Minnesota Tribal Courts, for Native American disputes.
