Sunflower County

Sunflower County is located in west-central Mississippi.  The County Seat is Indianola and the largest city is Indianola.  The Official Web Site is located at http://www.sunflowercounty.ms.gov/.  The 2014 population estimate is 27,496 and the 2010 census population was 29,450.  The land area is 697.75 square miles and there are 42.2 persons per square mile.

26% of the population is White, 72.8% is Black or African American, 1.5% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.4% is Asian, 0.3% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 0.6% is two or more races.  70.2% have a high school degree or higher, and 13% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $69,500, there are 8,394 households, an average of 2.92 persons per household.  The per capita income is $12,588,  the median household income is $26,619, and 36.1% of the persons in Sunflower County are considered below poverty level.

The total number of firms, at last estimate, was 1,945.  Retail sales (in $1000) were $211,330, and sales per capita were $6,825.  The percentage of black-owned firms is 29.5%, and the percentage of women-owned firms is 28.6%.
