Lucas County is located in south-central Iowa.  The County Seat is Chariton and the largest city is Chariton.  The Official Web Site is located at http://lucascountyiowa.com/.  The 2014 population estimate is 8,701 and the 2010 census population was 8,898.  The land area is 430.59 square miles and there are 20.7 persons per square mile.

98.5% of the population is White, 0.2% is Black or African American, 1.3% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.3% is Asian, 0.2% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 0.7% is two or more races.  89.9% have a high school degree or higher, and 11.3% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $82,700, there are 3,734 households, an average of 2.32 persons per household.  The per capita income is $21,126,  the median household income is $43,288, and 17% of the persons in Lucas County are considered below poverty level.
