Tennessee

Tennessee has limited jurisdiction courts, general jurisdiction trial courts, and appellate courts. The latter consist of the Court of Appeals, Court of Criminal Appeals, and the Tennessee Supreme Court.

Limited jurisdiction courts include Courts of General Sessions, Municipal Courts, and Juvenile Courts. Courts of General Sessions handle civil, domestic relations, mental health, estate, small claims, misdemeanor, and traffic matters. Municipal Courts handle city violations, traffic offenses, and felony preliminary hearings. Juvenile Courts deal with paternity, juvenile delinquency, and other juvenile matters.

The general jurisdiction trial courts include the Circuit Courts, Criminal Courts, Chancery Courts, and Probate Courts. Circuit Courts are responsible for domestic relations, civil, and criminal cases. Criminal Courts exist in 13 districts, and handle felony trials and misdemeanor appeals. Chancery Courts are courts of equity for civil and domestic relations cases. Probate Courts oversee estates, wills, conservatorships, and guardianships. Tennessee is divided into 31 judicial districts, each with at least one Circuit and Chancery Court.
