Alabama

In Alabama, there are limited jurisdiction courts, general jurisdiction trial courts, and appellate courts. The appellate courts consist of the Court of Civil Appeals, the Court of Criminal Appeals, and the Supreme Court of Alabama.

The limited jurisdiction courts consist of Probate Courts, Municipal Courts, and District Courts. Probate Courts handle matters such as wills, estates, guardianships, partitions of land, and name changes. Municipal Courts handle city ordinance violations. District Courts handle misdemeanors, small claims, and civil cases under $3,000. They share concurrent jurisdiction with the Circuit Courts on juvenile & civil cases between $3,000 and $10,000.

The general jurisdiction Circuit Courts try civil cases over $10,000, domestic relations cases, & felony criminal cases. They have concurrent jurisdiction with the District Courts on juvenile cases. The State of Alabama is divided into 41 judicial circuits, each with its own Circuit Court.
