Lowndes County is located in east-central Mississippi.  The County Seat is Columbus and the largest city is Columbus.  The Official Web Site is located at http://www.lowndescountygov.com/.  The 2014 population estimate is 59,730 and the 2010 census population was 59,779.  The land area is 505.51 square miles and there are 118.3 persons per square mile.

54.1% of the population is White, 43.8% is Black or African American, 1.8% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.7% is Asian, 0.2% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 1.1% is two or more races.  82% have a high school degree or higher, and 21.4% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $115,700, there are 23,178 households, an average of 2.51 persons per household.  The per capita income is $20,951,  the median household income is $37,868, and 25.4% of the persons in Lowndes County are considered below poverty level.
