Des Moines County is located in southeastern Iowa.  The County Seat is Burlington and the largest city is Burlington.  The Official Web Site is located at http://www.dmcounty.com/.  The 2014 population estimate is 40,255 and the 2010 census population was 40,325.  The land area is 416.12 square miles and there are 96.9 persons per square mile.

90.8% of the population is White, 5.7% is Black or African American, 2.9% is Hispanic or Latino, 0.8% is Asian, 0.3% is American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% is Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, and 2.3% is two or more races.  91.1% have a high school degree or higher, and 18.9% have a Bachelor degree or higher.

The median home value is $93,900, there are 16,993 households, an average of 2.33 persons per household.  The per capita income is $24,408,  the median household income is $42,451, and 13.8% of the persons in Des Moines County are considered below poverty level.
