Indiana

In Indiana, there are local courts, trial courts, and appellate courts. The latter consists of the Tax Court, which handles appeals of government agency tax decisions; the Court of Appeals, which reviews opinions from the lower courts; and the Indiana Supreme Court, which reviews all lower court decisions and death penalty cases.

Local courts are City & Town Courts, responsible for ordinance violations, misdemeanors, infractions, and traffic matters within city or town boundaries.

Indiana has two types of trial courts: Superior Courts, which are general jurisdiction trial courts that handle civil, criminal, and small claims cases; and Circuit Courts, which have unlimited trial jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. Indiana has 92 counties and 90 judicial circuits, so nearly each county has its own Circuit Court.
