Florida Public Records

The Florida open government Sunshine Laws, passed in 1967 and 1995, are the most expansive of all the U.S. States. They grant public access to all state, county, and municipal records. Public records can be papers, documents, letters, books, maps, tapes, sound recordings, photographs, etc., made or received by any agency in the course of official business. Exceptions apply to records relating to active investigations, personal privacy, and state or agency security.

At the lower part of this page you will see statewide resources that we have found useful in Florida.  To see resources at other levels, such as county or city governments, use the menus on the left side of your screen.

  • Court System - The Florida court system has four levels. At the first level are the County Courts, which handle misdemeanors, traffic violations, small claims under $5,000, & civil cases under $15,000. At the second are the Circuit Courts, which handle felonies, family law cases, civil cases over $15,000, probate, guardianship, & mental health cases, juvenile cases, and appeals from County Court. At the third are the District Courts of Appeal, which review decisions from lower courts. At the top level is the Supreme Court, which reviews decisions from lower courts, death penalty cases, public utility cases, and constitutional questions.  Florida Court Records
