In Utah there are limited jurisdiction courts, general jurisdiction trial courts, and appellate courts. The latter consist of the Court of Appeals and the Utah Supreme Court.

Limited jurisdiction courts in Utah are known as Justice Courts. They handle class B & C misdemeanors, ordinance violations, traffic & parking infractions, and small claims cases.

District Courts are the trial courts of general jurisdiction that are responsible for civil, felony, class A misdemeanor, domestic relations, probate, and small claims cases. Utah also has Juvenile Courts, which handle criminal, abuse, and dependent matters regarding children. Utah is divided into 8 judicial districts, served by a total of 71 District Court judges.
